Turkmen weaving is both highly collectable and invigorating. The various Turkmen tribes of Central Asia are known for their elaborate and often rigid social structures, the paradigms of which are reflected in their weaving. This exceptional piece was made originally as a tent-bag face, or “chuval”.

This antique Kizil Ayak Chuval rug bagface features nine large Tschowal güls of the Kizilayak Turkmenen with secondary Sharch Palak guls used by Turkoman tribes. Framed by a Yomud Asmalyk star border and flanked with running dog guard bands which is a repeating, stylized Vitruvian scroll resembling a wave.
